History of Grama Panchayat

Since these areas were part of the Vettam Panchayat until the formation of Mangalam Panchayat, this Panchayat also has the same socio-cultural history as the said Panchayat. Vettam is an ancient princely state and a very important area in the history of Malabar. There is an opinion that this princely state was known as "Vettam" meaning the light of the country because it was the area where the first letter of Malayalam, art and culture originated. The historical Vettam kingdom, which was under the rule of the Zamorin, was ruled by the Vettam dynasty. It is a well-known history that the Vettam king introduced new reforms in Kathakali. This area also witnessed Tipu Sultan's campaigns. Therefore, the roads built by Tipu Sultan to allow the artillery to pass during the campaigns are still called Tipu Sultan's roads. It is also said that the Kundanidhavas in Vettathunadu helped prevent attacks from other kingdoms. The family roots of Muhammad Abdurahiman Sahib, who terrified the British army, are in the area. The people of Vettathunadu also stood bravely along with the struggles against the British rule. The waves of the Malabar Rebellion of 1921 and the Khilafat Movement, which were part of the Indian freedom struggle, were felt in all areas here, including Mangalam. It is said that the White Army and the Chandi Army occasionally moved to Ponnani via the Tirur-Ponnani river and to Tanur via Kanolikanal. The people of this place played a decisive role in the said uprising. Many people who worked as frontline fighters of the Khilafat Movement are from here. A native of Mangalam and a native of Karattukadavu, Pothanchery Puthenveetil Kunjannambiar was the Ponnani Taluk Secretary of the Khilafat Movement. The first branch of the Muslim League movement in Malabar was started in Kootai in 1936. It was led by C.K.V. Muhammed Muhajir Sahib. In the past, the only means of transportation in this panchayat area was waterways. The Kanoli Canal and the Tirur-Ponnani River waterways connected Tirur and Ponnani. However, in 1967, with the construction of a bridge across the Tirur-Ponnani River at Mangattiri, road transportation began. Electricity was first introduced in Vettam panchayat in 1953 in the Mangalam area. The active presence of political movements in the early 1950s significantly influenced the progress of Vettam Nadu. Many Congress workers like R. Muhammad, Gopala Menon, Ali Akbar, M.R. Namboothiri, Achuthan Namboothiri, Palliri Gopalan, Kammukutty, K.C. Bava, Korusahib, Nambeesan, Muhammadali, and many other Communist workers like C. Moytheenkutty Master, C.K.V. Kunjammad, and R. Kunjappa, came into the public arena at this stage.
